Ph.D. Work: The dissertation is entitled as "Studies on Some Aspects of Productivity Management for Manufacturing and Service Functions". This work led to the study/development of (a) productivity measurement and evaluation model for multi-product multi-stage manufacturing firms, (b) relationship between productivity and other measures of organizational performance, (c) methodology to select an appropriate productivity measurement model under specified conditions, (d) current/future status of productivity management in manufacturing organizations (private and public) in India addressing important issues like productivity measurement models, achievement of productivity objectives as a corporate strategy, problems during implementation of productivity models, and action steps (short-term and long-term) required to overcome these problems through Delphi technique,(e) measurement and evaluation methodology for white collar personnel, and (f) a comprehensive service productivity measurement methodology. All these models and methodologies on productivity management have been applied and validated with the data obtained from direct and indirect activities/functions/departments of leading and well-established manufacturing companies in India.
Research areas of interest wherein PhD work has been supervised include Ergonomics/Human Factors Engineering, Safety Engineering; Healthcare System Optimization, Process Optimization; JIT-based Process Modelling; Productivity/Performance Measurement in Service/Manufacturing; Quality Engineering, TQM; New Product Development, Knowledge Management and Materials/Inventory Management.
He has supervised 17 PhD scholars till date with 4 research students currently working in Health Care System Optimization, Service Performance Modelling, and Ergonomics/Human Factors Engineering. He acted as an investigator in UKIERI-sponsored project on ‘Climate Change Issues and Environmental Performance of SMEs in India and the UK’ in collaboration with Aston Business School, Birmingham, UK. Currently, he is acting as Chief Expert guiding APO-sponsored project on ‘Research on Institutions Offering Productivity Courses’ for six Asian countries, and as the Principal Investigator in OFB-sponsored project on 130-mm shell process study including its ballistic behaviour. He has secured substantial industry and research grants (25 projects).
