Research Areas

  • Past and future of Earth's Cryosphere
  • Climate dynamics
  • Climate change in the Himalayas
  • Polar Meteorology

My research goal is to study climate change and variability over the polar regions. I use reanalysis, observations and numerical models to understand the physical processes that drive climate change in the polar regions. The changes in the polar regions can have large impact on global atmosphere and climate. Improved representation of these processes in models can reduce uncertainty in future projections of global as well as regional climate.

Convective anomalies over tropical Pacific can induce large changes in the polar regions, through the generation of atmospheric Rossby waves. I study the dynamics of Rossby wave teleconnection using observation data and models.

The Himalaya-Hindu Kush region, also known as the water tower of Asia, consists of large number of glaciers. The meltwater from these glaciers feed the river basins and large irrigation systems downstream. Changing climate is already impacting the glacial dynamics and thermodynamics over the region. Given the complexity of the region and the lack of observation record, the evolution of Himalayan glaciers are not well understood. Moreover, cloud microphysics and hydrological impact of climate change over the Himalaya-Hindu Kush region is unclear. I plan to address some of these issues using proper field observations and regional climate models.
