Debasis has been involved in research in geotechnical earthquake engineering, geohazards and liquefaction studies and ground improvement since early 90s. His recent research is focused on development of sustainable solutions for geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering problems related to slope stabilization, erosion control and ground improvement. He has supervised five PhDs, published 36 journal papers and filed for four patents. He also has been involved with several heavy civil, mining and infrastructure projects as a professional engineer in Asia, Europe and Americas over the past several decades.
