Research Areas

I have made significant research contribution in the area of Soft/Weak Soil Improvement, Soil-Structure Interaction, Geosynthetic-Reinforced Earth, Soil Arching, Geotechnical of Earthquake Engineering, Numerical Modeling and Multi-objective Optimization Technique in Geotechnical Engineering. Number of numerical and analytical models has been developed to study the behavior of improved grounds, embankment stability, rigid pavement and underground structures under static as well as seismic condition. Laboratory model testing facilities are also developed to conduct the tests on foundation/embankment resting over improved soft clay, geosynthetic-reinforced and unreinforced retaining walls, braced excavation under static and seismic condition. The research works conducting on the above mentioned areas will be very useful for structures that need to be built on weak soil in view of the fact that construction of structures on weak soil is very challenging for geotechnical engineers due to possibility of bearing failure, excessive settlement and local and global instability. In India, major proportions of soft soils are marine and river delta deposits. They cover vast areas of the Gulf of Kutch, river delta areas, shores of the Gulf of Cambay and in general, the entire Eastern and Western coastal belts. The construction of structures on such soil is very challenging. However, given the recent impetus to port connectivity and other industrial development projects like nuclear and thermal power plant, petroleum industries etc., construction on weak soil has tremendously increased. Keeping this in view, it is necessary to give solution and design guidelines to the field engineers about the various problems associated with construction on weak soil. The contribution will create an impact on the development of infrastructures like roadways, railways constructed on soft/weak soil, embankments, storage tanks, heavy industrial equipments etc. The research will provide an economic and effective solution for the structures that need to be built on soft/weak soil.
