The dams should not be susceptible to failure due to earthquakes as the safety of the habitants living on its downstream side is extremely important. Most of the dams were built prior to the development of modern computer analysis procedures. Earthquake forces were accounted for in designs by using methods that are now considered oversimplified. A finite element code has been developed to predict the performance of aging concrete dams during earthquakes considering soil-structure-fluid interaction which is one of the most challenging and complex problems found in the field of structural dynamics. The developed algorithm can assess the behaviour of dam at any age during its lifetime, so that remedial measures can be undertaken to strengthen or perhaps decommission the dam at the right time. The robustness of the developed algorithm has been demonstrated to engineers in various short term courses.

With the advent of modern computing techniques, structural health monitoring has received considerable attention in recent studies. One of the most interesting applications involves the monitoring of structural integrity through identification and assessment of damages. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of damage assessment is the need of developing a rational methodology to synthesize diverse numeral and cardinal information related to the structural condition and behavior. An even more challenging task is to develop computer based automated evaluation procedures. The potential of application of swarm based optimization techniques have been developed for locating and assessing damages in large and complicated structures. The outcome of the developed method is quite interesting and encouraging.
