I work in the broad field of STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY. Specifically, my research is focused on FABRIC ANALYSIS OF DEFORMED ROCKS. I have setup a laboratory (Fabric Analysis Lab - FAL) that has (a) KLY-4S Kappabridge for measuring Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) (b) Leica Digital Image Analysis system (Microscope and Digital Camera) (c) Zeiss AxioImager M2M microscope and digital camera with a fully motorized XY stage and Axio Vision module that allows Correlative Microscopy, Automosaicing and Digitization of microstructures in rock thin sections (d) Vibromet-1 for preparation of slides for EBSD analysis (e) Aztech HKL Channel 5 Software (Oxford Instruments, UK) for processing EBSD data (e) several Structural Analysis and data processing programmes. This FAL functions as a NATIONAL FACILITY, and all the instruments in the lab are available to any researcher interested in using them. My research integrates structural data obtained from field, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), and microstructural studies. Using this approach I and my research team have solved several outstanding problems in the field of Structural Geology such as (a) strain measurement using AMS in ferromagnetic granites (b) process of magnetite fabric developement in granites (c) relation between AMS, SPO and CPO in naturally deformed rocks (d) kinematic analysis and vorticity quantification using magnetic fabric (e) analysing superposed folds in quartzites lacking visible fabric elements (e) emplacement mechanism of granitoids in different parts of India etc. (f) structural control on mineralization (g) paleostress analysis using vein orientation data. Presently, considerable amount of my energy is focussed on MENTORING THE NEXT GENERATION OF RESEARCHERS who are expected to take Structural Geology forward and to higher levels in future. The research activities in my lab have been funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and Department of Science & Technology (DST).
