My research is mainly focused on thermodynamic analysis of crustal fluids and applications to understanding of (i) hydrothermal mineralization of base, precious and rare metals and (ii) metamorphism in craton-mobile belt ensembles. I use the techniques of fluid inclusion microthermometry to characterize fluids in diverse regimes and work out their PVTX relationships to understand the mechanism of transport of metals in hydrothermal fluid. I am currently working on molecular dynamic simulation of fluids for refinement of PVTX relationship and understanding of the mechanism of transport of metals in fluids.
I am particularly concerned with problems of mineralization associated with felsic magmatism and try to quantify the partitioning of metals in the melt-fluid regime that result in mineralization of a spectrum of metals. My research on the Malanjkhand copper deposit led me to the fascinating world of granites and the ‘granite problem’. I attempt to evaluate the metallogenic potentials of granite in order to answer the commonly raised question ‘why only some granites give rise to mineralization?’.
I apply my expertise on aqueous geochemistry to understand various environment issues such as fluoride contamination of ground water, acid mine drainage resulting from mining of Tertiary coal in the NE India and copper mining at Malanjkhand, MP.
I use remote sensing and GIS techniques for mineral potential mapping for appraisal of base and precious metal resources in India and have been actively collaborating with Scientists from ISRO. Recently, I concluded a project to assess the potentials of the Indian continental shelf for phosphates that led me to learn a few things on the processes in continental shelf such as the prevalence of Oxygen Minimum Zone in the Arabian Sea other than routine investigations on mechanism of enrichment of phosphate and important geochemical attributes of shelf sediments in general.
