I am primarily interested in the nature and evolution of orogeny through time, and the controls on an orogen’s thermal evolution. This interest has led me to explore the nature and composition of the lower crust, its behaviour during orogeny and the manner of its exhumation to the surface, through a combination of structural, metamorphic, geochemical and geophysical studies. At present, I am actively collaborating with geophysicists in investigating the extent to which the exposed upper crust and the record of its geological evolution can give us an insight into the present-day lower crust. Orogenies commonly result in terrane amalgamation; a natural consequence of this interest is an investigation into the construction of past supercontinents, particularly Rodinia and Gondwanaland.
In addition, I am interested in the application of structural and metamorphic methods to hazard investigation (related to landslides and earthquakes), and in mineral exploration. Further, as a part of my study, I have also delved into investigating the role of tectonics in influencing contaminants in groundwater, more specifically, arsenic. My interests in tectonics extend to investigating the role of tectonics in shaping planetary surfaces other than the earth. This has resulted in collaboration with the Space Application Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad, with whom I have begun working on the identification of terrestrial analogues of the Martian surface.
