Physical properties of a material and sometimes governing laws of physics can be drastically different when it’s dimension is reduced. On the other hand, symmetry of a lattice, which specifies a class of materials plays an important role that can exhibit an unusual electronic and optical properties which can be useful for development of future technologies. One of the interests of the Nanoscale Optoelectronics group is to explore the broad area of research in reduced dimensions of semiconducting materials such as, graphene like layered materials, nanowires, and quantum dots. We combine electron transport and optical spectroscopy to probe the electronic energy bands at low energy excitation of such materials. Examples of such two dimensional materials are the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), unlike graphene, these TMDCs in monolayer structure has the inversion symmetry broken that makes it to be an optically active direct bandgap material which can support strongly bound two dimensional excitons. We will not only look at the electronic states but also will probe the interesting physics of excitons when it interacts strongly with light.
