The Department of Biotechnology (http://www.bt.iitkgp.ac.in) started (in 1986) the earliest set of M.Tech programs in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering in the country and received support from DBT, Government of India, since then. The Department of Biotechnology (http://www.bt.iitkgp.ac.in) started (in 1986) the earliest set of M.Tech programs in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering in the country and received support from DBT, Government of India, since then. We initiated (in 1994) the B.Tech in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering, 1st in IIT system. The curriculum served as the model for the other programs in Biotechnology, added later in the country. The academic and research activities have been revised/re-structured this year, targeting intellectual excitements in students and innovative thrust of research students and Faculty. Befitting with the interdisciplinary dimension of the program the students are guided to choose electives across the departments and opt for project work in collaboration with the Faculty in sister Departments. Industry-institute participation in R&D is accorded highest priority, and has resulted in transferring technologies, in the country/abroad. The future goals are set in establishing world class resources and in making outstanding contributions in healthcare biotechnology and bioenergy. Read less

The three decades of nurturing of passionate learning by the students and building state-of the-art infrastructure for cutting edge research, the Department has been able to offer a curriculum satisfying intellectual hunger of the UG and PG students, and a taste of making new contributions by research students. Our research in Molecular biology, immunotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Microbial technology, Bioprocess engineering, Biomaterial and Tissue engineering, structural Biology and Bioinformatics has received the recognition. Faculty is known for their publication in international journals, having an innovative R&D display. The confident students present their project related group research work in international competition (like iJEM, MIT) and other conferences. For the incoming faculty and post doctoral researchers we have created and nourish an ambiance that are both challenging and rewarding. We are in 24X7 modes of research, innovation, translation and entrepreneurship; our laboratories will remain open always. We shall ensure that our students, researchers and faculty will create for the Nation- what is needed in the country in areas of biology and biotechnology.
