The Centre for Theoretical Studies (CTS) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was set up in 1998 in a part of the Old Building of IIT Kharagpur. Its primary goal is to generate and nucleate theoretical research on fundamental aspects of basic and engineering sciences. The role of the CTS in the academic framework of IIT Kgp is to bring together people of similar interests under a common umbrella. The CTS, apart from acting as a facility for research in theoretical science and engineering, also offers courses, trains graduate students and provides opportunities to post doctoral workers, faculty and researchers from outside IIT Kharagpur. Additionally, the CTS has an active visitors programme of both short and long term visitors and organises seminars, workshops on a regular basis on diverse topics. An important component of the CTS workshops and seminars is to motivate young students (both undergraduates from IIT Kharagpur and graduate students from within and outside IIT Kharagpur) to actively pursue theoretical research in front-line areas of science and engineering. Finally, besides promoting research on specialised topics within a given sub field, the CTS hopes to cultivate inter-disciplinary theoretical research as a major goal largely because of the diversity available in the academic population of or Institute. Over the last seventeen years the Centre for Theoretical Studies has grown into an academic unit which participates in teaching as well as in the research activities of the Institute. Currently 26 faculty members of the Institute are associated with CTS. In the near future, CTS hopes to provide specialised courses for undergraduates and also work towards facilitating individual, sponsored and interdisciplinary research in currently important areas in science and engineering.
